The mills that once stood proud on the lands of the York Mills neighbourhood have long been replaced by shining office towers and luxury condominiums. Yet, York Mills continues to maintain a peaceful tranquility and natural beauty that makes it one of Toronto's most desirable neighbourhoods.
From 1804 until 1926, York Mills was a thriving industrious locale hosting a distillery, a tannery, a blacksmith shop, three churches, a school, a post office, and the Jolly Miller Tavern which is still standing today at 3885 Yonge Street. The St. John's Anglican Church, originally built as a log cabin in 1816 was replaced in 1844 by the white brick structure that still proudly rings its bells over the valley every day at noon. York Mills' transition from rural hamlet to residential neighbourhood began in the 1930's.
1952, Canadian business tycoon E.P. Taylor initiated the development of York Mills Plaza and subdividing much of York Mills east of Bayview Avenue.
Most of the homes in the York Mills area were built between the 1920’s and 1960’s. Tudor-inspired manor homes, English-style cottages, and contemporary designs mingle with large numbers of ranch-style bungalows and split-level homes. Properties are generally large and rich in mature trees and foliage. Newer luxury condominiums line the well-treed hills of Yonge Street at York Mills Road.
The area is bordered by Highway 401 to the north, Yonge Street to the west, Leslie Street to the east and Post Road to the south.
The York Mills Plaza, conveniently located at the south-west intersection of Bayview Avenue and York Mills Road is a popular outdoor mall anchored by Metro grocery store and a Shoppers Drug Mart.
Bayview Village Shopping Centre just north on the north-east corner of Bayview Avenue and Sheppard Avenue. This upscale shopping centre caters to the affluent York Mills market with several designer clothing and accessory stores, gift shops, jewellery stores and an excellent selection of restaurants.
And while shopping is plentiful in the York Mills area, so are its parks. York Mills Park is located at the south-east corner of York Mills Road and Bayview Avenue and features a swimming pool, an arena, a children's playground and a baseball diamond. St. Andrew's Park, Tournament Park and the Don Valley Golf Course are nearby.
The York Mills neighbourhood is extremely well served by public transit with the York Mills subway station located at the north-east corner of Yonge Street and York Mills Road. A Go Transit station provides express service to the Pearson International Airport.
