St. Andrew's Neighbourhood Real Estate
The history of the St. Andrew's neighbourhood began with Windfield Farms, E. P. Taylor’s Oshawa-area stud farm, where the renowned thoroughbred Northern Dancer was born. As a result, a short tour of the neighbourhood will produce several horse motifs in various places: there are metal cut-outs in front of Windfields Junior High, steel horse heads above the bar at Windfield’s Restaurant, and so on. Although Taylor lived outside the neighbourhood's boundaries, he still made a mark on the neighbourhood.
The neighbourhood is mainly upper class, with homes averaging $1,000,000+. There is an extraordinary range of architectural styles among the mansions, from Georgian and Tudor classic designs to modern styles of the 60s and 70s. Along Bayview you will see very well kept 60s style ranches and along York Mills there are 40s bungalow. The home builders of these houses have specialized in the two-storey windowed front hall, the ornate outdoor carriage lamp, the driveway outsized enough to double as a hockey rink, and the doorway un-ironically pillared in classic Greek style.
However, this should not dissuade the less affluent from trying to find a home of their own in this area. There are many impressive and grand homes along Old Colony Road and Forest Hill Boulevard. If you look closer to the Yonge Street area of the neighbourhood more modest homes can be found.
There are two major grocery stores in the neighbourhood, however, for more shopping selection there are plenty of stores to choose from along Bayview. This neighbourhood is rich in lush green space and well-regarded institutions, such as York Mills Collegiate Institute and Crescent School.
Transportation is one of the best amentities of St. Andrew's neighbourhood, as it is close to York Mills station and GO Transit (with a bus link to the airport), as well as Yonge and the 401.
